Kevin Smith Discusses Why Cop Out Replaced A Couple of Dicks

We just recently covered the first trailer for Kevin Smith’s latest film, Cop Out — a film whose original title, A Couple of Dicks, was gathering similar controversy to Smith’s previous Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Fans pushed hard for Smith to stick with the title since it was announced, but we always knew that the studio could change their minds at any point. We even knew about the safer placeholder title, A Couple of Cops, which was to serve as a last resort if they couldn’t sell the film with otherwise.
But instead of that bland filler title, we got the ironic Cop Out. And now we finally know how, exactly, Smith decided on the title.
Speaking to the EW Hollywood Insider blog, Smith said that Warner Brothers ran the title by the big three television networks, ABC, NBC, and CBS, and the response wasn’t exactly what they wanted. The networks flat out refused to air any ad featuring that title, or any sort of variation, before 9pm.
The studio explained to Smith why that wasn’t a viable option:
So my feeling was like, it’s an R-rated movie, so who the f— are we talking to anyway before 9 o’clock? Warner Bros’s feeling was like, “Hey man, the sports audience, dickhead. We have to advertise to the sports audience on Saturday and Sunday and all those sporting events usually take place before 9 p.m. in the evening.” At which point, I was like, “Oh wow, you guys are way smarter than me.”
At that point, Smith realized that the title had to be changed. Given the trouble he had gone through with Zack and Miri, he really didn’t want to go through another film title battle.
Smith goes on to explain why he feels that fighting for the raunchier title wouldn’t have been all that successful:
And I’ve got a lot of people online, on Twitter especially, going, “Don’t lose this fight! Don’t let them change it!” And it’s like, “Dude, it’s not my call.” All these people online seem to think I have the almighty juice. I got no juice. I made Jersey Girl. I can’t pull any f—ing strings.
He didn’t mention Zack and Miri’s lackluster box office showing, but I’m sure that also factored into his realization that he basically has no clout when it comes to this fight. At the same time, he didn’t want to be resigned to a boring title like A Couple of Cops. And then came the breakthrough:
We went from a really clever title to the least clever title of all time. I was like, “God that title is going to feel like such a f—ing cop out.” And [the producer] goes, “We should just call the movie that.”
Smith goes on to explain that he likes the title because it feels like an 80’s buddy cop movie, and that it also pokes fun at the fact that they had to change the title in the first place. And I don’t think that anyone would argue that A Couple of Cops would in any way be a better choice.
The Bounty Hunter Movie Trailer

If you like such movies as Fool’s Gold, Hitch, Sweet Home Alabama, and Ever After, then you might enjoy director Andy Tennant’s latest paint by numbers romantic comedy, The Bounty Hunter. The film stars Gerard Butler as a bounty hunter learns that his next target is his ex-wife, played by Jennifer Aniston. If you don’t think the plot logline screams of high concept predictable lameness, watch the trailer embedded after the jump.
Watch the trailer now in High Definition on Yahoo. The Bounty Hunter hits theaters on March 19th 2010, the same weekend as The Runaways, Nic Cage’s Season of the Witch, the sci-fi comedy Hot Tub Time Machine, and The Good Guy.
THE BOUNTY HUNTER’s Poster Gives a Little Attitude

And, by little, I mean a very small amount. In all fairness this concept of taking two people who can’t stand each other and handcuffing them together hasn’t been done in about ten minutes. Personally, I’d rather watch Laurence Fishburne and Stephen Baldwin hate on each other for 90 minutes than anyone and Jennifer Aniston. THE BOUNTY HUNTER is directed by Andy Tennant, the guy who brought us EVER AFTER, FOOLS RUSH IN, HITCH, and FOOL’S GOLD so you know this is going to feature wall-to-wall action and excitement.
Oh, just check out the trailer, Gerard Butler’s bloody shirt and all:

For the record, I can’t say anything negative about Butler appearing in this film. In 2009, he’s appeared in TALES OF THE BLACK FREIGHT (voice), THE UGLY TRUTHER, GAMER, and LAW ABIDING CITIZEN. He does as much chick stuff as he does hardcore action. The Rock should take note.
THE BOUNTY HUNTER hits theaters on March 19th, 2010.
Big Daddy’s KICK-ASS Poster and Clip

“Good call, baby doll!”
Big Daddy, just like his little boy, Red Mist, and Kick-Ass himself, has gotten himself a character poster, wherein which, just like the other two, he tells us one thing he can’t do but, evidently, one thing he can very well. It comes to us today from UGO.
Check it out:

The fine people over at UGO were also kind enough to give us this amazing clip, which tells us a little about Big Daddy (played by Nicolas Cage) and how he likes to raise his loving children. Trust me, if this clip doesn’t shoot this movie straight to the top of your “must-see” list, nothing will.

Big Daddy Revealed in New Kick-Ass Poster and Red Band Clip

Lionsgate has released a new character poster for Matthew Vaughn’s big screen adaptation of Kick-Ass, revealing our first real look at Nicolas Cage in costume as Big Daddy. I wonder how mainstream audiences will respond to Big Daddy, especially cince the character’s design is a kinda a knock off of Batman. I noticed that they tried to keep the costumed Big Daddy out of the first movie trailer, likely for this reason. Also embedded after the jump is a hilarious red band clip featuring Big Daddy (sans costume) trying to teach his daughter, Hit Girl, what it feels like to get shot with a gun.

Official Plot Synopsis:
A twisted, funny, high-octane adventure, director Matthew Vaughn brings KICK-ASS to the big screen. KICK-ASS tells the story of average teenager Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), a comic-book fanboy who decides to take his obsession as inspiration to become a real-life superhero. As any good superhero would, he chooses a new name — Kick-Ass — assembles a suit and mask to wear, and gets to work fighting crime. There’s only one problem standing in his way: Kick-Ass has absolutely no superpowers. His life is forever changed as he inspires a subculture of copy cats, meets up with a pair of crazed vigilantes – including an 11-year-old sword-wielding dynamo, Hit Girl (Chloë Moretz) and her father, Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) – and forges a friendship with another fledgling superhero, Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). But thanks to the scheming of a local mob boss Frank D’Amico (Mark Strong), that new alliance will be put to the test.
Kick-Ass hits theaters on April 16th 2010.
